Students were given four different tutorial exercises, each to be completed within one week. This is aimed at sharpening students' skills for the next project and for future use. We were also assigned AutoCAD exercises that required attendance at three workshops to complete.

Tutorial 4 : Scale & Colouring Media

Reflection

I had fun doing all of these tutorial exercises because I discovered more about myself, such as what I'm good at and what I need to improve on in the future. I also learned new things about basic drawing skills in architecture. Also, AutoCAD wasn't that hard for me to do because I had already learned the basics during my high school days. So, it was an advantage for me to catch up, even though I missed the first class.

Project 1

Poster (10%)

Each section was given two famous architects, and students only needed to choose one out of the two. In my section, we were given a choice between Zaha Hadid and Le Corbusier. I chose Le Corbusier for my poster.

Reflection

This project was beneficial for me as I discovered more about famous architects and their unique buildings. Although the project felt a bit rushed, I managed to complete it on time. It was a valuable experience because I didn't know much about famous architects before, but now I have gained more knowledge in this area.

Project 2

Orthographic Drawings (40%)

Each student must produce six drawings of the Farnsworth House within the given time. Throughout the lectures, students will cover topics such as orthographics, axonometry, and one- and two-point perspective drawings, providing them with the necessary skills to complete the drawings.

Reflection

I thought this project was going to be easy because they provided the measurements, but I was wrong. I encountered some issues, with measurements going slightly awry, dealing with angles, and adjusting the size of the drawings to fit the A3 paper. However, I eventually made it through and completed it on time with the help of my friends and my tutor.

Project 3

Final Presentation Boards (20%)

Students must complete the drawings of the model and take pictures of their Architectural Design 1 presentation boards, along with a picture of themselves with the boards and model on pin-up day.

Reflection

I was glad that this last project was combined with Architectural Design 1, so I had ample time to complete my final project and could focus on one thing at a time. I learned a lot about my drawings through the tutorial exercises and the projects from this semester, as well as from my foundation projects. From my final project drawings, I realized that I have improved significantly in my drawings, particularly in my lineweight and depicting the human figure

Overall Reflection

The module about design communication, encompassing drawings, hatching, coloring, orthographic drawings, and axonometry, has been a journey of self-discovery and skill development. Engaging in the tutorial exercises was a source of joy as it provided insights into my strengths and areas for improvement. The exercises were not just about learning the technical aspects but also about understanding myself as an aspiring architect. Discovering new facets of basic drawing skills in architecture added a layer of depth to my understanding of the discipline.

The transition to AutoCAD was smoother for me because I learned the basics during my high school days. This prior knowledge became a significant advantage, enabling me to catch up effortlessly, even after missing the first class. The learning curve was steep, but the familiarity with the basics facilitated a quick adaptation to the software.

The projects, particularly the one involving famous architects and their buildings, offered valuable insights into architectural history. Though the pace felt rushed, I successfully navigated the challenges and completed it on time. This experience deepened my knowledge of renowned architects and their iconic structures, contributing to a richer understanding of the field.

The final project, a culmination of the semester and integrated with Architectural Design 1, provided a holistic and focused approach. It allowed me ample time to concentrate on my work, resulting in noticeable improvements in my drawings, especially in aspects like line weight and human figure representation. The collaboration with friends and the guidance of the tutor played a crucial role in overcoming challenges and completing the project successfully.

In retrospect, this module about design communication has been a dynamic exploration of various drawing techniques and skills, fostering both personal and professional growth. Each reflection, from the tutorial exercises to the final project, represents a step forward in my journey as an architect, reinforcing the significance of continuous learning and the application of newfound skills in future endeavors.
